# What Is Virtual Interior Design — And How Does It Work at CrysB Interior Studio?
Updated: Aug 12
Virtual interior design has completely changed the way we can plan, visualise and create beautiful homes.
You no longer need to live in the same city as your interior designer, schedule endless site meetings or try to imagine how a room might look from a few samples and furniture images.
At CrysB Interior Studio, I work with you remotely to create a clear design direction for your space using digital planning, mood boards, layouts and realistic 3D renders.
The idea is simple: you stay in your home, I design from my studio, and together we create a space that works for the way you actually live.

So, What Exactly Is Virtual Interior Design?
Virtual interior design — sometimes called e-design — is an interior design service that is completed remotely.
You provide me with information about your room, measurements, photographs, inspiration and what you would like to achieve. From there, I develop the design digitally and present the proposed space in a way that allows you to actually see the design before you start spending money or making permanent changes.
For me, one of the biggest advantages of virtual design is that it takes so much of the guesswork out of decorating.
Instead of wondering:
Will this sofa be too large?
Will these colours work together?
Where should the furniture go?
Is that artwork too small for the wall?
Will the room still feel spacious?
You get a visual plan before making those decisions.
And that can save a lot of expensive mistakes!
Why Choose Virtual Interior Design?
It Can Be More Affordable
Traditional interior design can involve numerous site visits, travel expenses, consultations and ongoing project-management fees.
Virtual interior design allows me to focus my time on the actual design of your space, which means I can offer a professional interior design service without all the additional costs that often come with traditional design.
It is especially useful if you love the idea of having professional design input but still want to manage the decorating or implementation yourself.
It Is Convenient
Everything can be done from the comfort of your home.
We can communicate remotely, share inspiration images, discuss ideas and make design decisions without having to coordinate endless appointments.
This also means I can work with clients throughout South Africa and internationally.
You Get to See the Room Before You Commit
This is probably one of my favourite parts of virtual interior design.
I use Coohom as my main interior design and 3D visualisation software.
It allows me to build your space digitally, position furniture, experiment with layouts, test finishes and create realistic 3D renders of the proposed design.
You can see how the furniture relates to the room, how the colours work together and how the overall design feels before anything is purchased or installed.
It is much easier to move a sofa around on my computer than realise after delivery that it completely overwhelms the room!
It Helps You Make Better Buying Decisions
One of the most common decorating mistakes I see is purchasing individual pieces without considering how they work together.
A beautiful sofa can still be the wrong sofa.
A gorgeous rug may simply be too small.
The perfect coffee table online may not work with the scale of the seating.
Virtual interior design allows us to look at the whole room, rather than buying pieces one by one and hoping they eventually come together.
How Virtual Interior Design Works at CrysB Interior Studio
Every project is slightly different, but the process normally looks something like this.
Step 1: Tell Me About Your Space
We start with your room.
I need to understand what is working, what isn't working and what you would like the room to become.
You will normally send me:
Photographs and videos of the existing space
Room measurements
Window and door positions
Furniture you would like to keep
Inspiration images
Colours or styles you love
Your practical requirements
Your approximate budget
And don't worry if you don't know exactly what your "design style" is.
Most people don't!
Quite often clients know what they like when they see it — they just don't know how to put all those ideas together. That's where I come in.
Step 2: The Design Direction
Once I understand your room and what you are looking for, I begin developing the overall design concept.
This may include:
Colour direction
Furniture style
Materials and finishes
Textures
Lighting
Flooring
Window treatments
Artwork
Decor
Layout and furniture placement
The goal isn't simply to make the room look pretty.
It needs to be functional, comfortable and appropriate for the people living in it.
A beautiful room that doesn't work for your everyday life isn't a successful design.

Step 3: Space Planning
Before we worry about cushions and lamps, the room needs to work.
Furniture placement, scale and proportions can completely change the way a room feels.
This is where I look at things such as:
Furniture sizes
Walkways
Conversation areas
TV placement
Bed positioning
Dining layouts
Storage
Traffic flow
Balance within the room
Sometimes simply changing the layout can make an existing room feel completely different.
Step 4: Creating the Room in 3D
This is where Coohom comes in.
I recreate the room digitally and start building the design.
Furniture, rugs, lighting, cabinetry, finishes, wall colours and decor can all be positioned within the virtual space.
Once everything begins coming together, I can create realistic 3D renders showing you how the proposed room could look.
For clients who struggle to visualise a design from a floor plan or mood board, this makes an enormous difference.
Instead of asking you to imagine the room, I can show it to you.
Step 5: Feedback & Refinement
Interior design should always feel collaborative.
Once you see the proposed design, we can discuss what you love and anything you would like adjusted.
Perhaps you would prefer a lighter sofa.
Maybe you realise you would rather have two occasional chairs instead of one.
Or perhaps we need to reconsider a colour or furniture piece.
It is far better to make those changes during the design stage than after the furniture has arrived!
Step 6: Bringing the Design to Life
Once the design is finalised, you can begin implementing it at your own pace.
Some clients want to complete the whole room immediately.
Others prefer to do it gradually.
That is another benefit of virtual interior design — you have a clear direction to work towards, even if you decide to complete the room over several months.
What Can I Help You With?
Virtual interior design can work beautifully for almost any space in the home, including:
Living rooms
Bedrooms
Guest bedrooms
Children's rooms
Teen rooms
Dining rooms
Home offices
Kitchens
Bathrooms
Open-plan living areas
Holiday homes
Airbnb properties
It can also be used simply to help with a room that feels "not quite right".
Sometimes you don't need an entire renovation.
You may just need the correct furniture proportions, a better layout, new lighting, artwork, styling and a more cohesive colour palette.
You Don't Have to Start From Scratch
This is important.
Virtual interior design does not mean throwing everything away and starting again.
In fact, I love working with pieces clients already own.
That beautiful dining table from your parents.
The artwork you bought while travelling.
A sofa that is still in great condition.
A cabinet that simply needs to be styled differently.
Good interior design isn't about replacing everything. It is about looking at what you already have, deciding what works, adding what is missing and creating a room that feels intentional.
Why I Love Virtual Interior Design
For me, interior design should make your home feel easier to live in.
It should help you make confident decisions rather than constantly second-guessing yourself.
And it should still feel like your home when we're finished — not a copy of a showroom or a Pinterest picture.
Virtual interior design gives us the ability to explore ideas, test layouts and visualise the end result before the expensive part begins.
And that is exactly what I love about it.
Ready to See What Your Space Could Become?
If you have a room that isn't quite working, you're planning a renovation or you're simply tired of buying pieces that don't seem to come together, I would love to help.
At CrysB Interior Studio, I can help you take all those ideas floating around in your head and turn them into a beautiful, functional design that you can actually visualise.
Your home. Your lifestyle. Your style — just pulled together beautifully.
